Nestled in the Chiles Valley, above the northeast side of Napa, is an unassuming little winery ranch that doubles as a bed and breakfast. While the Chiles Valley is known for growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc grapes, RustRidge Ranch winemaker Susan Meyer also experiments with growing other varietals and making her own blends. For over 21 years, esteemed winemaker Kent Rosenblum assisted Susan in creating the award-winning wines produced by RustRidge.

The secluded property, once a large thoroughbred horse ranch, was purchased by Susan Meyer’s family in 1972. Now it reflects Susan’s and husband Jim’s two passions: wine and horses.

Susan’s “Animated line depicts what you can expect from her more imaginative, experimental wines. In her 2014 Animated White you can smell tangerine, peach and honey dew melon while tasting tropical vanilla, lime zest, pear and pineapple. The flavors meld together nicely and finish clean and crisp. Made from a blend of Sauvignon Blanc (40%), Chardonnay (32%) and White Riesling (28%), the grapes were grown on Susan’s estate and blended together to create a symphony of flavors.

The label has an interesting story, too. Inspired by an original artwork from husband Jim’s earlier career at Hanna Barbera, the label art is from the animated cartoon, Atom Ant, depicting time travel from LA to New York in a second. Talk about a conversation starter!
A Quaint Country Oasis
But what would great wine be without drinking it in a great setting? When entering RustRidge Ranch, you are met with a lovely bed and breakfast surrounded by a garden of irises.
A dirt road leads you past the garden and pastures (of horses!) and to the tasting room situated at the foot of the vineyards. Tastings are by appointment only and are hosted by the winemaker, herself! This means no contending with crowds and you can ask all the questions burning in your mind as you sip her delightful selection of wines.
If you enjoy spending time drinking delicious, aged, (and very reasonably priced!) wine in beautiful, quiet country settings, taking in nature, and petting horses, this little-known piece of paradise is for you!
